It had been three days since they’d left Ginger and the brothers’ farm. Grace couldn’t help but think of them, wondering if Ulysses had finally passed on to the next world. Someday, she hoped to return to that same farm and tell them how much she appreciated what they had done for her group. At that moment, though, all she could think about was the fact that they had just crossed over the state line into Kansas. They were so close to home that she couldn’t contain her excitement. The others were overjoyed as well. Though the nights were harsh, and no one had gotten a decent night’s sleep since Ginger’s farm, they fought to keep their spirits upbeat.

If they continued to push with the same determination they’d had in the last few days, Grace was confident they would make it back to the village before the end of the fifth day of travel. She had no idea if it was dumb luck or a higher power watching out for them, but the trouble they had encountered on the road was minimal. A drunken man had tried to take one of the horses at gunpoint, but Paul was quickly able to disarm him and discovered he had no ammunition. Giving the fellow a bottle of water, the group had moved on their way. It quickly became clear, though, that humanity wasn’t the only danger they needed to worry about.

The horses had become targets for wildlife as well. Their first night together after leaving the farm had proven that point. A black bear, no more than a year or two old, had tried to take down Patrick. While the meat and the fur that they got from the kill helped to keep them well-fed and would keep someone warm in the winter months, Grace did not enjoy exterminating the creature. It was only trying to survive in a world that had disintegrated into complete chaos. She couldn’t imagine the influx of people in the forest, taking over the wild animal’s territory in an effort to find food of their own.

Mankind had been a plague on the planet for thousands of years, but now they presented a new danger to the creatures that also called it home. The laws that had once protected such animals from being killed were now nothing more than ink stains on pieces of parchment. There was no one to enforce governing wildlife, zoos, hunters, or anything else in the country. It was a constant thing to try not to think about everything happening around them. More often than not, she could look in any given direction and see pillars of smoke from burning buildings. Any time they approached an area with a large population, the smell of death lingered. Now, as they approached one of the last larger communities on their journey, her heart again trembled.

“What do you think?” Paul asked.

“I genuinely don’t know. It has been so hit and miss over the last couple of areas. It’s always safer to go around than it is to try to go through.
